18:02:19 #startmeeting 18:02:19 Meeting started Wed May 3 18:02:19 2017 UTC. The chair is flexlibris. Information about MeetBot at http://wiki.debian.org/MeetBot. 18:02:19 Useful Commands: #action #agreed #help #info #idea #link #topic. 18:02:25 who is here for the community team meeting? 18:02:34 * Phoul is here 18:02:35 arma2: after meeting I will have a closer look 18:02:36 Hi Phoul. 18:02:40 hi all! 18:02:44 i'm here as observer/liason from the network team 18:02:45 I'm here 18:02:59 hi Phoul, kat5, Samdney, catalyst 18:03:25 i'm here in..whatever mishmash of hats i wear. 18:03:37 so many hats 18:04:02 okay, who has a status update and wants to go first? 18:04:21 I can go first 18:04:27 cool, go Phoul 18:05:46 Last week I pulled more questions into the support portal content, and brought us up to 104 questions that will initially be in the portal. We were at 70ish previously. I'm now going through and answering the questions that do not yet have answers. 18:06:25 do you still need help with answers? 18:06:40 From the translation side, I will have the transifex report for April up today. Am also looking into ways to restrict which languages are available per resource, however I think this will require Transifex to help us. 18:06:44 Samdney: Sure :) 18:07:29 please send answers to me first for copy editing, before they go on the repo 18:07:30 Oh, and I did some tidying up of the permissions on our RT instance. There were some accounts that needed removing and such. 18:07:40 thanks for that Phoul 18:08:03 do we have a good way to know whether our answers are useful answers? beyond "use intuition based on experience" i mean? 18:08:27 phoul, flexlibris: will write some answers and send you within the next days :) 18:08:30 (i ask because surely somebody in the ux space has thought about that question) 18:08:51 We dont have any easily sharable data, but we do know what often comes into execdir. Once its on the portal, I think there are plans for a feedback system of some sort. 18:09:09 ok 18:09:39 arma2: once we have the portal up we will have a couple more ways to determine usefulness 18:09:40 ... else we can still readjust the answers, after they are online, I think 18:10:06 each question will have an up/down "is this helpful?" option 18:10:16 we'll use analytics on the page to see what people actually click on, etc 18:10:21 oh great! 18:10:34 and we'll have a mechanism for feedback/questions that aren't up on the portal 18:10:37 What do we plan to use for analytics? 18:11:00 I dont think any solid choices have been made for the tech behind this yet. 18:11:04 the data we are going with now is pretty rich, since it's a lot of old RT answers, and we think that probably covers a lot 18:11:13 but I anticipate that this portal will get a different set of users than the RT one did 18:11:29 I think the RT one probably attracted a more technical audience, and this portal (I hope!) will get all kinds of people 18:11:37 kat5: Phoul is right 18:11:46 Cool. 18:13:09 Thats all for my status update :) 18:13:09 Phoul: anything else? 18:13:14 great, thank you! 18:13:19 who's next? 18:13:46 I can go. 18:13:55 kat5, go ahead 18:14:21 My update is that I've been busy with non-Tor stuff. :-( 18:14:28 it happens! 18:14:29 But I have something I need help/advice with. 18:14:34 sure 18:14:51 (Oh, I have been keeping up with t-shirt requests, though.) 18:15:01 thanks for that :) 18:15:49 We need a new page to let people know what t-shirts we have available. Ideally this is something that can be updated when we run out of things/get things back in stock. 18:16:13 I don't know how web maintenance capacity looks right now. 18:16:55 Would it be best to make this a wiki page so that I could update it? Or do we want it to be part of the web site proper? Or a wiki page now, and a real page on the new site? Or? 18:17:12 for now, I think it should be a wiki page 18:17:18 since the entire website is getting redesigned 18:17:33 eventually, I think this should be part of community.torproject.org 18:17:56 Cool. Then I'll do that and put in a ticket to get the link changed from torservers to it. 18:17:57 we can change the https://www.torproject.org/getinvolved/tshirt page to point to the wiki page 18:18:04 Yep. 18:18:50 great! 18:18:52 My plans after that are to start a content audit of the docs we have available for relay operators. 18:19:00 Which I'll do after I set up a relay. 18:19:58 kat5: awesome. we have an incomplete page on the support portal git for relay ops: https://gitweb.torproject.org/support-portal.git/tree/plain/operator.txt 18:20:07 I'm figuring that this will be the very beginning of getting a handle on what should be on the relay op support site. 18:20:13 Cool. 18:20:30 it's debatable whether the support portal is the right place for relay ops support 18:20:39 on the one hand, it's more technical than the other stuff, so maybe it doesn't belong 18:20:48 on the other hand, who is to say that the support portal should just be the quote-unquote easy stuff? 18:20:59 Would it be a good idea or a bad idea to solicit ideas/pain points on the tor-relay list? 18:21:04 I'll have the relay parts pushed in the next couple days. If it would be helpful, can send you an email once thats up. 18:21:04 I am in favor of putting helpful docs in places where people will look 18:21:22 Wherever it ends up going, it needs to be collected in one place and accessible. 18:21:32 kat5: agree 18:21:33 kat5: i think soliciting stuff would work best once there's a list of known things 18:21:45 more of a "what did i miss" than a "hey what do you think" 18:21:49 there's also community.torproject.org that will get created next. maybe the relay ops stuff will migrate over there 18:21:55 arma2: okay. I'll probably come at you for info at some point. 18:21:57 but in either case we will have it all in one place 18:23:19 kat5: anything else? 18:23:20 That's all for me. 18:23:24 great 18:23:32 someone else want to go next? if not, I can go 18:23:35 i'll go quickly: 18:23:48 a) i'm doing a talk this afternoon for technically philly: 18:23:54 http://2017.phillytechweek.com/events/dev_talks 18:24:00 b) there's a blog post from december that kat missed: 18:24:08 https://blog.torproject.org/blog/tor-heart-pets-and-privacy-research-community 18:24:26 c) it would be swell if we made a plan for supporting the website mirrors community, since i think that got dropped a while ago. 18:24:29 eof 18:24:57 (oh, also i'm writing up a defcon submission, since my past weekend at an american hacker con reminded me that we've left behind the american hacker scene.) 18:25:09 you're up flexlibris :) 18:25:18 Samdney: it sounds like you wanted to work on the mirrors 18:25:26 yeap :D 18:25:39 samdney: should i make a trac ticket with all the links i said earlier? 18:25:40 Samdney: if you need help or have questions, feel free to ask. :) 18:25:50 great. thanks for doing that Samdney. 18:26:00 arma2: good idea 18:26:08 phoul: thanks! 18:26:30 okay, I can go 18:26:45 who is the person who should ping if I have questions? You arma2? 18:26:56 hum. me or sebastian i guess. 18:27:09 also, there is no Community -> Mirrors trac subcomponent :) 18:27:28 * arma2 chooses Applications -> GetTor 18:27:37 hi? 18:27:55 what did I do? 18:27:59 hi sebastian 18:28:05 sebastian: i'll finish the ticket and then you'll know 18:29:02 any more on the mirrors? I don't want to interrupt 18:29:13 nope, go for it 18:29:18 cool 18:29:21 not at the moment, I'm waiting for the ticket :) 18:29:44 last week, this week, and most of the month of May I am doing a lot of trainings 18:29:52 mostly at libraries or library conferences 18:30:29 sukhe also did a training in India, which he updated the community team list about 18:30:57 ah mirrors. I am not responsible for mirrors 18:31:08 and our Tor trainers in Pakistan have another upcoming this week at the Peshawar Digital Youth Summit 18:31:15 maybe nobody is 18:32:05 oh, and one of our Tor trainers gave a talk on Tor at the Internet Freedom Forum in Nigeria this past week 18:32:25 I've been trying to keep up with all the Global South trainers and make sure they have the support they need. Ideally, we can get them to the next meeting. 18:32:38 I've been working with Jon to make that easier (really it's just a matter of getting the invites out soon enough for visas) 18:33:09 2. I made a lot of updates to the community team wiki including opening a bunch of new tickets for ongoing work and small tasks 18:33:22 so if you're looking for something to do, look there :) 18:33:28 flexlibris: oh, speaking of, i have a lead on a good contact in uganda. i'll let people know as i learn more. 18:33:36 arma2: awesome 18:35:01 Does anyone know if ilv got the swag to bring to cryptorave? 18:35:04 linda opened #22118 for support portal tasks, but I realize now it's under the UX component, so maybe we want to start displaying UX tickets on the community team page 18:35:22 kat5: I *think* he did, but maybe he will show up here and correct us if not? :) 18:36:13 flexlibris: for the support portal stuff it would be useful 18:36:16 3. one of the open tickets I'm going to be doing a lot of work on in the next few weeks is #22082 18:36:54 Samdney: i think i can add just the UX - website component, not the entire thing 18:38:02 4. another one of the tickets is #22080. please do that if you haven't done it yet :) 18:38:32 :) 18:38:39 5. I'm working on two grants right now. one for LFP, one for Global South outreach. wish me luck. :) 18:38:53 hehe, good luck! 18:39:01 you will rock it! :D 18:39:03 6. finally, I need to write the April community team report. I have been SO BAD at reports in the last few months, my sincere apologies 18:39:07 I've just been slammed (see above) 18:39:19 but using meetbot will help me be better at it 18:39:37 okay, that's it for my status update 18:40:03 any questions/comments? if not, does anyone else have a status update? 18:40:11 no 18:40:55 okay. once I make some progress on the things I discussed, I will be working more on the support portal with Phoul 18:41:09 and also on Global South outreach, in particular identifying possible places for future Tor Meetings. 18:41:39 flexlibris, phoul: on which answers I should work? For which answers do you need the most help? 18:41:56 and after we get all the support portal content together, we will start to work some more on the content for the outreach/community portal 18:42:03 Samdney: just look at the unanswered questions on the repo 18:42:17 ok, or so :) 18:43:04 any other community team business to discuss? 18:44:40 samdney: i've made most of the ticket, but i decided to actually run the script to see if it still works, and it's still crunching. so, stay tuned. 18:45:06 (it looks like somebody taught the script to actually fetch a tor browser from each mirror and see if it gets the right file. neat, but slow.) 18:45:55 arma2: I will look and see what I can do :) 18:47:03 I have nothing to add for the meeting. Distracted by private stuff. :) 18:47:14 okay, sounds like we're all set. 18:47:20 I will add the meetbot logs to the wiki 18:47:23 #endmeeting
