16:02:33 <donuts> okay, we're GO
16:02:41 <donuts> pad is here: https://pad.riseup.net/p/tor-ux-team-2022-keep
16:02:52 <donuts> please head straight to updating your todo list while I ready the announcements
16:06:55 <donuts> is nicob here?
16:07:03 <nicob> yep, hi o/
16:07:32 <donuts> oh hello ^^
16:07:35 <donuts> okay are we all good?
16:07:51 <nicob> all good here
16:07:53 * championquizzer is done
16:08:03 <nah> all good
16:08:14 <donuts> well the announcement this week is "New Release: Tor Browser 12.0"
16:08:18 <donuts> which is a pretty big subject
16:08:25 <nah> \o/
16:08:34 <donuts> and is also the main thing championquizzer wants to chat about
16:08:34 <nicob> \o/
16:08:42 <nah> woohoo! congrats everyone!
16:08:44 <championquizzer> hehe donuts
16:08:48 <championquizzer> \o/
16:09:11 <donuts> so before we get stuck in, is there anything else unrelated to 12.0 that anyone wants to ask/discuss first?
16:09:39 <donuts> I guess one thing worth mentioning is that Nah and I are going to be tied up working on the S9 grant this week
16:09:58 <donuts> and we're also meeting to discuss nah's work on the risk assessment with the higher ups on Thurs
16:10:14 <donuts> plus the Firetail report will be presented to S9 on the same day
16:10:27 <donuts> so: busy week
16:10:43 <nah> there is also the east africa meeting on the same day
16:10:51 <nah> meetup*
16:10:53 <donuts> yesss, tell us more nah
16:11:03 <nah> and Latin America meetup on Wednesday
16:11:25 <nah> on the Latam meetup we will be sharing the travel plans for 2023
16:12:00 <nah> and on the East Africa we will be sharing the last updates from Tor
16:12:13 <nah> and other organizations will be sharing their updates with us as well
16:12:17 <nah> that's it
16:12:19 <championquizzer> nice!
16:12:29 <donuts> lovely, ty!
16:12:33 <nicob> niceee
16:13:11 <donuts> another thing I wanted to quickly mention: I noticed emails about Q4 reports going out already
16:13:24 <donuts> it's good to be organized, but this is also a very busy time at the end of a short quarter
16:13:54 <donuts> so please prioritize anything that needs completed in Q4 that's still on your kanban first
16:14:09 <donuts> if you don't manage to complete everything, that's obviously fine – we'll reshuffle things like we always do
16:14:30 <nah> great, ty
16:14:33 <donuts> I've also asked to move the UX Team Priorities session to January to give us a little breathing room as well
16:14:49 <donuts> plus it makes it a little easier to coordinate with the applications team, who are also doing theirs in Jan
16:15:12 <championquizzer> community team is doing in jan too :)
16:15:27 <donuts> perfect :)
16:15:35 <donuts> okay that's enough blabbing, shall we talk 12.0?
16:16:00 <donuts> <yes! everyone cheers>
16:16:01 <donuts> great
16:16:08 <donuts> 12.0 finally released last week!
16:16:12 <donuts> https://blog.torproject.org/new-release-tor-browser-120/
16:16:24 <donuts> thankfully, the things we were mainly worried about seemed to have gone smoothly
16:16:44 <nicob> woooo
16:16:48 <donuts> namely the l10n migration, tor-launcher refactor and universal binaries for macOS
16:17:17 <championquizzer> +1!
16:17:27 <nah> yay!!!
16:17:27 <donuts> so far, I've only seen a couple of bug reports relating to the above (potentially due to the tor-launcher migration)
16:17:44 <donuts> and some grumping about the universal binaries increasing the filesize on macos on mastodon
16:18:13 <donuts> however universal binaries was 1000% the right call to make, as anyone who has to answer questions about "which version do i install" can attest to
16:18:16 <donuts> cc: championquizzer lol
16:18:23 <championquizzer> lol
16:18:53 <donuts> the two things that have generated the most noise are issues with Norton/anti-virus providers misidentifying 12.0 as a virus
16:19:18 <donuts> however that looks to be resolving itself as Norton et al update their threats
16:19:51 <championquizzer> yes! fwiw, virus total latest reports have removed trhe false positives
16:20:00 <donuts> i saw! good news
16:20:05 <donuts> the second issue I've noticed get a lot of attention is drag and drop protection
16:20:40 <donuts> unfortunately I didn't notice that MR sneaking into 12.0 since the parent ticket was unresolved, and it's caused a few issues
16:21:02 <donuts> I've posted a summary here for anyone who's interested: https://forum.torproject.net/t/drag-and-drop-protections-in-tor-browser-12-0/5854/4
16:21:25 <donuts> but tl;dr many of these issues should be resolved in 12.0.1 thanks to ma1's hard work
16:22:22 <championquizzer> yep, these two has been popular across our user support channels + the issue with tor browser launcher
16:22:35 <donuts> namely the bookmarks manager should be fixed, dragging and dropping between the page and the chrome should also work, and we _might_ also get window to window drag and drop
16:22:46 <donuts> DnD to external apps will still be blocked however
16:23:01 <donuts> championquizzer: ack
16:23:11 <donuts> on I completely forgot about tor browser launcher
16:23:11 <donuts> thanks for the reminder
16:23:17 <donuts> so before I talk about that, real quick:
16:23:41 <donuts> I'm conscious that there is no visible UX for DnD protections at the moment, and I don't think we have any documentation either
16:23:56 <donuts> obviously refining the protection itself is the first priority for 12.0.1
16:24:13 <donuts> but after that we can think about UX and support, probably in the new year
16:24:16 <donuts> if that sounds cool?
16:24:29 <championquizzer> sounds good
16:24:33 <donuts> lovely
16:24:35 <donuts> SO
16:24:39 <donuts> as championquizzer says
16:24:44 <donuts> we also broke torbrowser-launcher
16:25:11 <donuts> the plan is to improve how we notify important external stakeholders of major changes in future
16:25:28 <donuts> because busy folks don't have the time to read each tor-qa or tor-announce email
16:25:56 <donuts> that is happening here already: https://gitlab.torproject.org/tpo/applications/tor-browser-build/-/issues/40711
16:26:05 <donuts> please add anyone you think we're missing to that ticket :)
16:26:06 <championquizzer> +1
16:26:41 <nicob> ooh nice
16:26:49 <donuts> I think that's it from me? massive thanks to all the devs for their hard work
16:26:53 <donuts> nah for all the testing
16:26:57 <donuts> nicob for the lovely graphics
16:27:11 <donuts> and championquizzer and hackerncoder for user support!
16:27:13 * nah is clapping
16:27:30 <donuts> all things considered this was a great release, especially given the ultra short turnaround time since 11.5 👏
16:27:52 <donuts> championquizzer: anything else? if so over to you!
16:27:56 <nicob> *claps*
16:27:57 <nah> thank you donuts, devs and everyone else for the hard work! great release in the end of the year :)
16:28:10 <nicob> yesss thanks everyone!! <3 amaazing work
16:28:18 <championquizzer> hehe thanks all and yes amazing work all around
16:28:51 <championquizzer> also mentioning nina13[m] for all the user support work :)
16:29:39 <donuts> yes great job nina13[m]! <3
16:29:40 <championquizzer> donuts: wrt to the torbrowser launcher issue, is fixed now: https://github.com/micahflee/torbrowser-launcher/pull/661
16:29:46 <championquizzer> \o/
16:29:52 <donuts> oh fantastic!
16:31:46 <donuts> One last thing I forgot to mention: the applications team are having a retrospective about 12.0 on Monday, if you have any suggestions for improvements to the release process, please have a think and let me know
16:32:00 <donuts> championquizzer: coordinating with Community *sooner* is obviously on my list :)
16:32:21 <championquizzer> ack! thank you, donuts
16:33:14 <donuts> np!
16:33:23 <championquizzer> one quick question, when are we planning for the 12.0.1 release?
16:34:05 <donuts> I think it should be asap
16:34:12 <donuts> we were previously blocked waiting for Android CVEs
16:34:18 <championquizzer> ah right
16:34:24 <donuts> however I believe we found out today that there won't be any
16:34:47 <donuts> and there was also a suggestion in the new year to decouple android and desktop releases again so that desktop isn't blocked waiting for android CVEs in future
16:35:38 <donuts> things are getting done here: https://gitlab.torproject.org/tpo/applications/tor-browser-build/-/issues/40709
16:36:46 <donuts> okay are we all good for this week? anything else anyone would like to ask/discuss?
16:36:58 <championquizzer> perfect! thanks for all the updates donuts
16:37:14 <donuts> thank you all!
16:37:14 * championquizzer is good
16:37:21 <nah> i'm good
16:37:23 * nicob is good too

16:37:32 <nicob> thanks all :)
