14:00:15 <slacktopus> <agrabeli> Hello everyone! Welcome to the September community gathering :slightly_smiling_face:
14:00:22 <slacktopus> <agrabeli> Hope you've all had a great month!
14:00:45 <slacktopus> <agrabeli> Who's joined us today? :slightly_smiling_face:
14:01:52 <slacktopus> <hellais>
14:02:00 <slacktopus> <elioqoshi> o/
14:02:00 <slacktopus> <darkk>
14:02:42 <slacktopus> <kenyiyasin> Hello, I am just arrived in my hotel in Kampala
14:02:43 <slacktopus> <sarath_ms>
14:02:43 <slacktopus> <sbs>
14:03:00 <slacktopus> <agrabeli> Hello @kenyiyasin thanks so much for joining us! :slightly_smiling_face:
14:03:29 <slacktopus> <agrabeli> If others join the meeting, feel free to introduce yourselves asynchronously or to just waive
14:03:50 <slacktopus> <agrabeli> We're using this pad to collect the topics to discuss during today's meeting here: https://pad.riseup.net/p/ooni-community-meeting
14:04:01 <slacktopus> <agrabeli> Please add any other topics to the pad that you'd like us to discuss today
14:04:31 <slacktopus> <kenyiyasin> No problem Maria
14:06:33 <slacktopus> <agrabeli> We already have 3 topics from @babatunde.okunoye but he doesn't appear to be online atm. Is there anything else someone would like to discuss until @babatunde.okunoye joins?
14:06:57 <slacktopus> <agrabeli> (perhaps topic 3 is the reason why @babatunde.okunoye is offline)
14:08:39 <slacktopus> <agrabeli> OK, I'll answer @babatunde.okunoye's questions briefly now, particularly since they may be of interest to others too and this chat is logged anyway.
14:08:55 <slacktopus> <agrabeli> #1 Is there a way of knowing the total number of OONI tests being run from individual countries?
14:09:10 <slacktopus> <agrabeli> *Answer:*
14:09:29 <slacktopus> <agrabeli> Yep! You can find this information by:
14:09:41 <slacktopus> <agrabeli> 1. Going to OONI Explorer: https://explorer.ooni.io/world/
14:09:57 <slacktopus> <agrabeli> 2. Hovering over each country, where you will see the amount of measurements listed
14:10:12 <slacktopus> <agrabeli> Alternatively, you can scroll down on that page, where you'll find the measurements listed per country
14:10:49 <slacktopus> <agrabeli> By "measurement", we mean each OONI Probe test (and the results it rendered). Therefore, the number of measurements per country reflects the number of OONI Probe tests run in that country.
14:11:24 <slacktopus> <agrabeli> In the OONI Explorer data map, the countries with the darkest shade of blue are the countries where the most measurements have been collected from / where the most tests have been run from.
14:12:06 <slacktopus> <agrabeli> In Africa, for example, we can see that most tests so far have been run in Morocco, Mali, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Egypt and Kenya.
14:12:49 <slacktopus> <agrabeli> Usually more tests means that there's a somewhat large local community of testers and/or that those who are running tests are doing so on a daily basis over a long period of time.
14:12:56 <slacktopus> <agrabeli> Are there any questions so far..?
14:14:12 <slacktopus> <kenyiyasin> Your answers is well noted
14:14:32 <slacktopus> <agrabeli> great
14:14:49 <slacktopus> <agrabeli> # 2. In updating country test lists, is there an automated way of knowing if an entry is a duplicate, or can this be done only by manual checking?
14:14:57 <slacktopus> <agrabeli> *Answer:*
14:16:26 <slacktopus> <agrabeli> Whether you're using a spreadsheet (like a CSV file) or a text editor, you can quickly/easily check to see if a website is already included in the test list by pressing *CONTROL* and *F*. This will make the search bar appear, where you can type your website and easily check to see if it's already included in the list or not.
14:17:03 <slacktopus> <tunde77> I'm online now, from Accra FIFA Africa
14:17:28 <slacktopus> <agrabeli> If you make a pull request on GitHub without checking for duplicates, that's not a problem, since GitHub will tell you that there are duplicates and in which lines those are. Then you can go back to your pull request and delete those duplicates.
14:17:59 <slacktopus> <agrabeli> @tunde77 hello, welcome! :) I was just answering the questions you listed in the pad :slightly_smiling_face:
14:18:33 <slacktopus> <agrabeli> @tunde77 I just answered your first 2 questions. If you can have a look at my answers, can you let me know if you have further questions? :slightly_smiling_face:
14:18:51 <slacktopus> <tunde77> Yes, you're right Maria, Question 3 is why I'm joining late. I had to leave another meeting for this :grinning:
14:19:11 <slacktopus> <agrabeli> @tunde77 so sorry about that, and thanks so much for joining us! Hugely appreciated
14:20:59 <slacktopus> <agrabeli> If you're not a GitHub user, ignore what I wrote above.
14:21:22 <slacktopus> <agrabeli> For those who may not be too familiar with test lists ==> We're referring to lists of websites that are tested for censorship.
14:21:46 <slacktopus> <agrabeli> Along with community members, we created country-specific lists of websites to test, which include local media websites, human rights sites, etc.
14:22:02 <slacktopus> <agrabeli> If you're not a GitHub user, you can share your list of suggested websites to me and I can add them.
14:22:53 <slacktopus> <agrabeli> Are there any questions based on what's been discussed so far?
14:24:04 <slacktopus> <tunde77> Nope. They're clear enough.
14:24:15 <slacktopus> <agrabeli> ok, great
14:24:23 <slacktopus> <agrabeli> soooo......
14:24:39 <slacktopus> <agrabeli> # 3. How is the time and date for OONI community meetings decided? Will using a tool like Doodle help increase participation, by avoiding clashes with other events?
14:24:50 <slacktopus> <agrabeli> This is an important one!
14:24:53 <slacktopus> <hellais> On this note, be sure to click on the cross icon on the pull request and scroll to the bottom of the page to see what is the actual duplicate URL.
14:26:13 <slacktopus> <agrabeli> We generally tried to find a time for community meetings that could work across timezones -- all the way from South America to Southeast Asia
14:26:53 <slacktopus> <agrabeli> There's a big 12h time difference across these timezones, so we figured that having the meeting at around 14:00 UTC could potentially somewhat work across timezones (though definitely not perfectly well for all)
14:27:36 <slacktopus> <agrabeli> During past community meetings, we proposed hosting these meetings every last Tuesday of the month at 14:00, but we're definitely open to any alternative proposals you may have
14:28:06 <slacktopus> <kenyiyasin> Hello, OONI and its partners. I am very happy of knowing you. I am Kenyi from South Sudan an Executive Director of non profit organization known as The Advocates for Human Rights and Democracy (TAHURID)
14:28:14 <slacktopus> <agrabeli> The benefit of having a standardized time and date for the meeting is that people know when to expect it, the downside is that it may/will clash with people's schedules...
14:29:07 <slacktopus> <tunde77> Thanks Maria. This makes sense.
14:30:11 <slacktopus> <tunde77> I guess I'll set up fixed reminders on my calendar
14:32:09 <slacktopus> <agrabeli> @tunde77 you're right though to point out that having something like Doodle would help make it more inclusive, so that people can fit it into their schedules.... having a standardized date/time also means that there's a lot of variance in terms of attendance across meetings....
14:32:21 <slacktopus> <agrabeli> idk, what would you all prefer...? Thought?
14:34:34 <slacktopus> <darkk> I think, running a doodle pool for next meeting time makes sense. This meeting time was set significant time ago, maybe it's time to shuffle it around a bit (as attendees change over time).
14:36:08 <slacktopus> <tunde77> Actually, now that you've explained the rational of Last Tuesdays of the Month 2pm, it makes sense. Let's stick to this, except, like I can see, they are community members supporting Doodle polls. I'll go with either decision.
14:37:24 <slacktopus> <agrabeli> OK, I'll share a doodle with mailing lists to set up the next community meeting. Let's see how that goes and iterate further.
14:39:07 <slacktopus> <agrabeli> So this week there's the Forum on Internet Freedom in Africa (FIFAfrica)! Unfortunately the OONI team won't be able to attend (though we would have loved to!), since we're traveling to Mexico City for the bi-annual Tor Meeting.
14:39:31 <slacktopus> <agrabeli> Is anyone hosting sessions at FIFAfrica this week that they'd like to share/announce? :slightly_smiling_face:
14:41:39 <slacktopus> <agrabeli> (for reference: https://cipesa.org/fifafrica/)
14:42:34 <slacktopus> <agrabeli> Or are there any other questions? Updates? Censorship findings or anything else you'd like to share?
14:42:51 <slacktopus> <agrabeli> (we don't have any more agenda items: https://pad.riseup.net/p/ooni-community-meeting)
14:48:51 <slacktopus> <ooni269> I have a question. What OONI's relationship with the media? Is new coverage good for the OONI effort?
14:48:52 <slacktopus> <tunde77> I've arrived in Accra Ghana for a Pre-FIFA Africa event, and will be at FIFA Africa (Thursday and Friday). There's also a partners' meeting going on from Monday where OONI's partnerships around the world have received a huge mention! So I'll be sharing other updates on OONI's work and discussions on network measurements here.
14:50:16 <slacktopus> <tunde77> Also, I wish I could show you what I'm wearing now at the workshop I'm currently attending - the OONI shirt Arturo and Maria gave me in a Kampala research workshop
14:50:32 <slacktopus> <agrabeli> @tunde77 yay! :)
14:51:00 <slacktopus> <agrabeli> (@tunde77 the ooni-entropy channel is popular for sharing pictures :slightly_smiling_face: )
14:51:38 <slacktopus> <agrabeli> And we hope to meet as many of you as possible, and to equip you all with more OONI t-shirts :slightly_smiling_face:
14:52:18 <slacktopus> <eiko> @agrabeli I travelling with OONI t-shirt now :P
14:53:04 <slacktopus> <agrabeli> @ooni269 News coverage is usually good! It helps spread the word and (hopefully) engage more people around the world with censorship measurement research :slightly_smiling_face: We often work with journalists too in relation to upcoming research reports.
14:54:01 <slacktopus> <cmngounou> AfroLeadershjp's coordinator will also be in FIFAfrica and will meet OONI People. Jean Claude Kryos from Cameroon.
14:54:37 <slacktopus> <agrabeli> Hello @cmngounou thanks for joining us! :slightly_smiling_face:
14:56:17 <slacktopus> <cmngounou> Thanks @agrabeli I am joining you from Buenos Aires (Argentina), where we are holding pre-event meetings at the International Open Data Conference. That's why I've missed our FIFAfrica.
14:57:24 <slacktopus> <cmngounou> But here too, digital privacy, digital rights and internet rights have started to be a hot topic in the framework of Open Data...
14:58:15 <slacktopus> <eiko> @cmngounou my colleague @khairil.yusof is at IODC now too, can ping him and catch up :slightly_smiling_face:
15:02:16 <slacktopus> <cmngounou> Yes @eiko thank you ! @khairil.yusof and I met yesterday at the Open Data for Development OD4D leaders meeting, organized by WebFoundation, IRDC. Where it was discussed of data privacy, digital rights and data protection without what, Open Data will hurt more than making good.
15:03:59 <slacktopus> <agrabeli> And speaking of data privacy, I think this is a very interesting read: https://www.nytimes.com/2018/09/22/sunday-review/privacy-hearing-amazon-google.html
15:05:32 <slacktopus> <agrabeli> So we're 5 minutes past the end of the meeting time, but the OONI team is available on this channel almost every single day, where you can ping us with any questions / feedback / ideas / etc in general.... until the next monthly community meeting in October!
15:06:20 <slacktopus> <agrabeli> I'll be sharing a Doodle with the ooni-talk, keepiton, partners, and netafrica mailing lists so that community members can choose a date and time that works best
15:07:03 <slacktopus> <tunde77> Thanks Maria, it's been fun being here today
15:07:46 <slacktopus> <agrabeli> Thanks @tunde77 @kenyiyasin @cmngounou @ooni269 @eiko & everyone else for joining us today!
15:08:13 <slacktopus> <agrabeli> Hope you have a great day/evening :slightly_smiling_face:
